Imperial Yarn The American Wool Tradition

July 7, 2011

The Imperial Yarn Trunk show is on the road again and the first stop will be in Woodstock, GA at The Whole Nine Yarns. These fabulous ladies will be hosting their 5th annual Christmas in July on July 24, 2011. I was lucky enough to meet some of the crew at TNNA and I must say that I am a bit jealous of those of you who live close enough to check out their shop in person.

A big Thank You to Vogue Knitting! We were fortunate to have our Petal Necklace Kit by Leigh Radford featured in their Early Fall Issue. Getting noticed always makes those of us at the yarn warehouse do a little prancing and dancing as we jump to fill all the orders.

Here at the ranch/warehouse we know the sheep, the wool and the yarn intimately, but what you all are making with it is a bit of a mystery. I love to imagine swanky sweaters, lacy shawls and warm socks, but I would love it even more if you would consider sharing pictures of what you have made on Facebook or Ravelry. I promise to show them to the lambs that live close to the yarn shop in the orchard, and tell them to concentrate hard on growing more wool!

Early Morning

Dear Friends,

For days I’ve been wanting to get outside early in the morning with my camera because the light is so beautiful. Instead I just hustle outside to start chores and get on with the day, always wishing for the camera. But this morning was different. As soon as my feet hit the floor, I walked out to the living room and looked up Hinton Creek like I usually do, and there were the sheep coming off Nechtar Butte in this long line as if they were on a mission. They were strung out for at least a mile and moving as if they had a destination in mind. The leaders were headed for who knows where, and the rest were just following along! I stepped outside to watch them, and you could hear the ewes calling their lambs and the lambs answering. I love that sound, sort of like the “ Symphony for the Sheep ” that the visiting school kids sang, only this was the “Symphony of the Sheep.” It was wonderful, and there was that beautiful morning light. So I jumped into my boots, grabbed the camera and headed out the door in my nightgown, riding the 4-wheeler up to where I could get some photos. The sound and beauty of them moving across the landscape gives me such joy. Maybe I can share a little of it with you in this photo.

I can't write this month without mentioning that it’s the 4th of July. “Americana” here on the ranch. We enjoyed lots of fresh Oregon strawberries and swimming. For early evening fun, we loaded up and headed out on a "crop tour,” driving through various parts of the ranch looking at the spring planted wheat, fall planted wheat, spring and fall planted barley, alfalfa, and of course wildlife. Then we arrived back to the headquarters to blow up a couple big boxes of -- I can’t tell you what all we blew up since you never know who might read this! Just know that there was plenty of noise. Happy Birthday to this wonderful country!

Warm Regards,
Jeanne
